Florals & Fur

wearing: 1940s hat by The Little Shop of Gorgeousness and Fripperies, true vintage 1940s fur stole, Retrospec’d blazer, The Seamstress of Bloomsbury Dolores dress in Mayflower print, American Duchess/Royal Vintage Shoes heels, true vintage 1940s corde purse.

Back in May I realised that I really needed to do something about the fact that for the last seven years I have been in the obese category. You know how people love to say that BMI stuff is rubbish, and not accurate. Well, I let myself believe that for a really long time. And that’s exactly how I got there. Talking about weight is as much of a faux pas as talking about politics, and has the same outcome usually. People get emotional, defensive, take things personally or start projecting. They try to force their own opinions on others, try to tell them how they should think and feel.

In recent times people have realised that there’s options if you’re struggling with weight loss and don’t like the way you look. There are things you can do. Medications you can take. You don’t have to eat cauliflower rice and go to the gym. I have hated the way I look for the last seven years. No matter the amount of mental gymnastics I did, and trust me I worked hard at that. But when you take photos of yourself on a fairly regular basis it becomes very confronting. Horrifying actually. It also didn’t help that in the past year I started getting comments on Instagram telling me to take Ozempic. Yes, that actually happened. A number of times. It’s one thing to be disgusted at the sight of yourself, but to have strangers confirm that you do really look as bad as you think you do, the writing was on the wall.

Why am I talking about this? Because I think it would be weird to post one set of photos with a -12kg difference and not say anything. Also because I find the way people gate keep weight loss stuff or become really hostile about it strange. It really shouldn’t be that big of a deal whether you spent three hours a day at the gym and ate cauliflower rice or injected yourself once a week. For me, it was neither of those. I did it the 1940s way with good old fashioned pharmaceutical amphetamines prescribed by a doctor.

You know how in 1940s magazines you see all those advertisements for pills with funny names that promise to get you slim and trim? Those medications have stood the test of time and are still very much prescribed today. If you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, chances are you are already taking this very same medication. I like to hope that no one reading this took this post personally and made it about themselves, since I touched on that in the beginning. But if you did, you could probably try being a bit more resilient. One of the reasons I hesitate to write anything genuine and honest on here is for this exact reason. I am so bored with shallow and vapid topics. Anyway, now that I’ve ripped that bandaid off, here’s a dress I got a few years ago which didn’t fit me until a month ago. I am the happiest I’ve felt in a long time and feel like myself again.

A vintage lover from Brisbane. I am passionately nostalgic for decades before my time. I enjoy recreating looks inspired by the past wearing both vintage and vintage reproduction clothing. My blog focuses on the styles of the art deco period and features both authentic vintage pieces from the 1920s, 30s & 40s, as well as modern reproductions of clothing from these eras. My blog explores creating modern every day looks with vintage elements. If you would like to say hello get in touch with me through harlow@harlowdarling.com.
