No one ever talks about how hard it is matching white seperates. I really love the all white outfits that were worn by Hollywood stars in the 1930s & 1940s. I have a whole folder saved with Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers and Rita Hayworth wearing looks exactly like this one. But actually being able to match the pieces to style an outfit like this…it’s really frustrating. So no one better give me a hard time about the fact that my slacks are off white and a few shades darker than my blouse and shoes…
For my birthday this year my friend got me a 1946 Kodak Brownie camera. I wonder why they called it that, was someone hungry? I guess the carry case it comes in does resemble a brownie… I’ve popped some film in it and providing that the film didn’t get overexposed when it was being loaded up, I’m hoping to get some photos out of it. I’ve been taking the camera to various vintage outings and snapping away, so it will be interesting to see how the photos turn out. If they turn out…
Because I’m old, I still remember the days of those plastic instant cameras and how after every holiday the film would be taken off to be developed and there would always be at least one photo of someones thumb. Which is why I do not, not for a moment, take it for granted having access to modern DSLR cameras. And modern editing technology! You will never catch me spouting nonesense like “born in the wrong era”.
WWII trench art and sweet heart brooches are something I’ve really gotten into lately. The one I’m wearing in these photos is RAF insignia moulded into plexiglas, which I can only hope was made out of the remains of a downed Luftwaffe. Because that’s one of the appeals of these pieces, wondering what circumstances led to them being made. Now the downside of collecting these things as a woman is the condescending conversations that one is forced to have with the old men who sell this type of paraphernalia. My friend and I both bought pieces from this same insufferable person who insisted on being extremely patronising even after it was made explicit that we have a pretty thorough knowledge of WWII history. And then there’s the ones who treat you like you’re some kind of cute animal that’s learned a funny trick because you’re interested in this stuff…
They are named after brownies, goblins in British folklore
The first photo of you walking down the stairs…stunning! I also love monochromatic outfits, and they look effortless, but in reality are so hard to put together.
