A few months ago I decided to buy an off camera flash. This is something I’ve wanted to buy for years but always hesitated. Because when dressing like this, and also taking photos in public the last thing you want to do is attract even more attention…For those that have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s those big umbrella looking things that photographers use. I know that the quality of my photos sucks compared to everyone else out there, and that’s because previously I’ve avoided using lighting equipment (for the above mentioned reasons).
The biggest motivator for getting the flash? I wanted to be able to take nice photos with buildings (which are usually tricky spots when it comes to lighting). What I forgot to factor in though was that Brisbane has like…five nice buildings. Yes, really. And as you will soon find, they all pretty much look the same with small variations. Always sandstone with a dark green accent…Oh well. With most of these buildings being either government buildings or university buildings. You know how in America theres’s Ivy League? Well in Australia Sandstone Universities are our equivalent.
As someone who wears only repro, I try really hard to be mindful how there are still going to be inaccuracies. I’ve noticed that in a lot of instances certain details one expects from a forties piece will be deliberately toned down or missing completely. Specifically shoulder pads. Which are kind of crucial in forties suits… Most repro suits have shoulder pads, but they will be so subtle that they may as well not be there. Like this blazer which is part of a suit. I have worn it a few times now and felt that she shoulders were the wrong shape. I was worried if I tried putting in some proper shoulder pads myself I might totally ruin the suit. I ended up doing it anyway and had to use two layers of thick modern shoulder pads to actually achieve the correct forties shape. Hopefully it looks okay…
