This outfit, I’m not so sure about. I don’t know if I actually like the colours I paired together? The pop of red seemed like a good idea at the time, but in hindsight I’m worried it looks a bit gauche. Next time I wear this dress I will go for white accessories for a more elegant look.
Every time I make a new hat I learn something along the way, and like to think that I improve with each make. I always start with a modern straw hat as the base and then use water or steam to reshape, cut bits off and glue or stitch until it takes on a 40s appropriate shape.
If feels a bit criminal to admit to this, but I did ruin a true vintage 1940s hat to make this one. The hat itself wasn’t flattering but the millinery flowers on it were fantastic. So I salvaged the flowers and put them on this new hat and used the remainder to make a matching corsage.
Even though I’m not completely satisfied with this outfit, the gardens in these photos are so spectacular it would be a waste not to post these photos. It takes a special level of mastery to grow Foxgloves and Delphiniums.
