wearing: Lucille dress by The Seamstress of Bloomsbury, vintage fur coat, Lulu Hun shoes, true vintage 1940s purse, turban by Madam George on Etsy, self made corsage, sunglasses and brooch via my friend

Another forties Parisian inspired look because this aesthetic has really captured my interest lately. Turbans like this one were a quintessential part of French fashion during this era, usually worn with furs and chunky wedged shoes. This style was seen as a symbol of defiance under the occupation; the extravagant over the top dressing was a political statement to boost moral and prove that the French spirit had not been defeated despite rationing and fear of uncertainty.

These types of outfits usually had a patriotic element, the colours of the French flag or the Cross of Lorraine subtly embroidered on a purse or belt. My friend recently made us these wonderful B-26 aircraft brooches so I feel like that was the perfect touch to bring that element to the outfit. I had the turban custom made by French designer Madame George, and the fur coat is currently on loan from a friend who moved overseas. Recently I had my first encounter with a member of the public who felt the need to come over to me and my friend and express their extreme disdain over the fact that my friend was wearing an eighty year old fur stole. Artificial fur has always been my personal preference, but I see nothing wrong with owning vintage fur that’s decades old. The woman who made this mistake got the clap back of her life from my friend and I.

Minutes after we started taking these photos it started to rain, which is very Parisian I suppose, so the weird colours and lighting in these shots reflect that. Eventually I decided it wasn’t worth dealing with the on and off rain and risk this fur coat getting damaged and that wet dog smell that real fur is prone to. So we packed it up and headed to a cafe. Not a French cafe however, an Italian one. Coincidentally it still had the aesthetic that one associates with Parisian cafes so it was the perfect opportunity to try recreate some of the photos that inspired this look.
