Sometimes I will go a really long time without making anything. Even though I am a massive hoarder of craft supplies and always have a full stash at all times, should the inspiration hit. And then when it does hit, I’ll make a bunch of things at once and then nothing for a few years. Recently I was watching what seems to be the favourite film of all vintage girls, The Red Shoes. Which I actually found a bit disappointing after all the hype, but aesthetically it is a nice film with great mise en scene.
There’s one forgettable scene where Moira Shearer is walking along the boardwalk in Cannes and there’s a stall selling these cartwheel sun hats. Which was probably the most impressionable part of the movie for me because I immediately decided to make myself one, and then another… The easiest (and most economical) way to make a 1940s style sun hat is to reshape a modern boater hat.
All you need is a hot iron with steam. I documented the process of making this hat and its now up on my TikTok and Instagram in case anyone else wants to make themselves a vintage appropriate, budget friendly sun hat for summer. Summer has thankfully just ended here, but before it did I wanted to document a dress I’ve been wearing a lot. I posted it last year as part of a cooler weather look and it wears nicely regardless of the season. I’ve got a few more vintage craft projects that I’m keen to start so some of my future makes will definitely be popping up in future posts!
