From September to April my bike sadly resides in the shed. Because the summer months are unbearable for any exerting physical activity. But this week I’ve pumped up the tires and given the bike a good polish in anticipation of revisiting old favourite bike trails and discovering new ones. When I’m looking at outfits to buy, it’s always a huge bonus if I find something vintage appropriate that I can also wear while riding my bike. Because a cute outfit when riding a cute bike is a must, or it is for me anyway. Which is how I’ve ended up owning so many of these shorts in different colours.
A lot of the time I get my inspiration from the many photos that there are on pinterest of ladies riding bikes in the 30s & 40s. Of course that was a time before mandatory helmets, so these photos are not an accurate depiction of how I actually look riding my bike. Vintage hair styles are unfortunately not compatible with helmets! So braids are about as exciting as it gets. Last year I did set my hair and wear a hairnet and a headscarf for the Tweed Ride but it was a bit of a sweaty, tangled disaster. But as someone who can be at times easily distracted and not the most coordinated, it really is for the best that we have strict helmet laws in Australia.
One of my favourite things about going for bike rides is the fact that it always means taking the scenic route. I love riding along the river or along lakes covered in water lilies. A lot of the time I end up stopping and getting side tracked because I’ve come across an interesting bird or some other creature. Or a beautiful garden, like this one. Hopefully in the coming weeks I’ll be able to share these adventures on my instagram stories…
