I turned thirty four the other day, and finally got my first ever formal frock. This may come as a surprise, from someone with an already fancier than normal wardrobe. But I have actually never owned any formal wear in the traditional sense, by which I mean a nice floor length gown. The reason for this is because I’ve never had any occasion that suited required one.
When I got into vintage fashion I did invest in some classy dresses for cocktails and going to the theatre. But nothing too extravagant. Living in Brisbane it is easy to feel self conscious about being overdressed, so wearing anything floor length has always felt far too out of my comfort zone. Recently however I have had more and more nice social events where formal wear is appropriate. Which left me in the awkward position of having nothing suitable to wear, because there have not been a lot of options when it comes to vintage reproduction evening wear.
So imagine how thrilled I was when Miss Bamboo released their Cora gowns in several beautiful jewel colours. For my birthday this year my friends very kindly treated me to a Miss Bamboo gift card which I immediately purchased this gown with. I’m more than a bit thrilled with it, I am absolutely delighted!
The fabric is light but luxurious and the cut is the exact level of elegant and modest that I love about 1940s fashion. I originally made hair flowers to go with the dress but wasn’t entirely happy with them, so decided to go with rhinestone snake jewelry instead. As my birthday falls during the Lunar New Year I thought the addition of snakes fit nicely.
