Swan Bank Station

Why do I own so many floral dresses? Because they are really easy to style. And I’m lazy. Instead of trying something new I like to stick to a formula that I know works, only very occasionally venturing out to try something new…You can wear a floral dress all year round so long as you style it appropriately. Maybe that should also mean that I don’t need as many floral dresses as I own, but that’s not going to stop me! I’ve already worn this dress several times since I got it, and each time I was able to style it a different way.

Same goes for this blazer. That I also own in brown. A few years ago I self imposed the rule that I can only buy things that are easy to wear and can be restyled multiple different ways. Which has made such a difference when it comes to picking out an outfit to wear (no more of those I have nothing to wear moments). My friends and I also got together recently and created a Hat Library. This means when one of us buys a great new hat, all of us get to enjoy it. We did this by going through each of our hat collections and photographing each hat to then upload into a shared folder. This way when we’re planning our outfits there’s no shortage of options.

Doing this has meant I can try things I would otherwise be too hesitant to purchase. Like this hat for example. I’ve admired 40s hats in this style for the longest time, but wasn’t sure how well one would suit me. So this is one that I borrowed from the Hat Library. Some of the vintage enthusiasts that inspire me the most are the French reenactors I follow. Outfits like this are very similar to the ones worn by those ladies, and are entirely my inspiration behind this look. Unfortunately there wasn’t anywhere that looked any bit remotely French to take these photos, so I figured looking gormless at this vintage train station in the middle of nowhere would have to suffice.

I also love “tried and true” outfit formulas and dresses are the best for that. The idea of a hat library is genius!

A vintage lover from Brisbane. I am passionately nostalgic for decades before my time. I enjoy recreating looks inspired by the past wearing both vintage and vintage reproduction clothing. My blog focuses on the styles of the art deco period and features both authentic vintage pieces from the 1920s, 30s & 40s, as well as modern reproductions of clothing from these eras. My blog explores creating modern every day looks with vintage elements. If you would like to say hello get in touch with me through harlow@harlowdarling.com.
