Instead of saying how sad I am that winter is over, I’m going to be uncharacteristically optimistic and say that I’m just so grateful we got a little bit of winter this year. Enough for me to give this fabulous coat a few outings. Which is as good as it gets here in Brisbane. I had been considering a vintage fur coat but after hearing my friends horror story about how she went to get her true vintage 1940s coat out…and the fur fell off it in a pile right in front of her… Because moths…I decided against getting one. And then I found this faux fur reproduction one that was in the exact same style as my friends true vintage coat.
I was doing the grocery shopping, wearing this coat, because I have no sense of shame anymore about being extra. A woman came up to me excitedly and asked “is it mink?” To which I responded goodness no, there’s no point in owning such a thing in Queensland. She was impressed and pointed out that she was Russian and usually had a good eye for mink. Same, as in quite literally. I insisted that she give the “fur” a stroke and see for herself that it was indeed synthetic, much to her surprise. It is just as well we don’t have the red paint brigade here.
The dress I’m wearing underneath the coat is a stunning 1940s reproduction by the brand Revival. They make wonderful, authentic 1940s clothing that often features in popular costume dramas, All Creatures Great and Small being an example. My initial brooch is yet another one of my clever friend’s creations. She has very kindly made all of us girls reproduction Lucite initial brooches to wear. The brooch features the first letter of my actual name, for those wondering why it’s not a “H”.

Very stylish and I’m glad there are those of us who like to be “extra” even while grocery shopping!
