Kuskovo Palace

June 19, 2013 · 30 Comments

When Count Sheremetev started building Kuskovo in the 1730s he wanted the palace and the grounds to rival that of Russian royalty and nobility.  Sheremetev was the richest man in Russia during this period and no expense was spared in building the lavish estate which consists of a series of summer houses, an orangery and a grand palace. Today, the palace has been restored to its former glory and is an incredible place to visit. It is an amazing experience to step back in time to the 18th century and explore the vast and beautiful grounds. These photos cover only a small amount of the estate, but give some insight into what a magical place Kuskovo is.

My favorite details are the green roof, the floor and the huge tiled wood burners (not quite sure how to call these heating contraptions, we have them in my country, usually made of glazed terracotta).

Wow! I want to live here. I've always wanted to go to Russia. I've just been catching up on your posts, it's so cool you're there. I know you live in Australia, but are you Russian? My family is from Croatia and growing up, people always assumed Croatia is Russia for some reason, even though it's over 1000 miles away. I've always kind of identified myself with Russia because of that lol.

What grand, incredibly gorgeous rooms. My goodness, each one took my breath away and I lingered over it for a good minute or two, soaking up each sublime, ornate, opulent detail and trying to imagine how much more stunning they must look in 3D form in person. This is one of my favourite travel tour posts ever, honey, thank you so much for the awesome guided tour.

oh wow, this palace is glorious! i don't really know anything about architecture and interiors or artistic periods, but this actually looks really french to me. maybe it wasn't culturally influenced though and it was just the style at the time? either way it's just beautiful!
